Softly Studio: Finding Magic in the Everyday

What inspires you?

Everything around me! My family always laughs because I’m forever stopping to take photos of tiny things, a shadow on the footpath, a leaf or flower, a nice colour combination I spot out in the world. I’m constantly collecting little bits of beauty without even meaning to. Inspiration is everywhere if you slow down enough to notice it.

Do you have a favorite design that you’ve created? Why does it stand out to you?

My lush tropical banana leaf palm is one of my absolute favourites, and it stands out to me because of the design itself. I love the soft watercolour details, the layered greens, and the way the leaves almost feel like they’re moving. I painted it while on a holiday with my family, so it carries lots of lovely memories with it.

It’s definitely a bit bolder than my usual style, but it still holds that calm, gentle feeling I’m always drawn to. It has this beautiful island resort mood, think warm air on your skin, a soft breeze drifting past, the smell of salt in the air and sand between your toes, and that sense of escape. I always imagine it in a relaxed bedroom with soft sheer curtains, or in a beautiful bathroom paired with earthy stone toned tiles and brushed brass hardware.

How do you celebrate when you finish a big design project?

I love what I do, so a lot of the time it doesn’t even feel like a big project, it’s just fun and creative. I usually acknowledge little wins as I go, for me, that might be a coffee and a sweet treat at my favourite cafe, a slow wander around the art gallery, or sitting outside and watching the sunset.
